70 years ago today at the top of Mount Suribachi, United States Marines raised the American flag for what would be one of the most famous pictures ever taken. After inching their way up the beaches and defeating the Japanese suicide bombers and scaling the inactive volcano raising the flag was a symbol of the victory and is now immortalized by the photograph taken by Louis Lowery.
