For the tennis team, Jose Constantino (11) is the prime example of someone who knows how to turn something into their passion. A player who shows dedication and enjoyment of the sport. Constantino first became interested in tennis after noticing how similar it was to another sport he already enjoyed.
“I really enjoyed playing badminton and found it similar to tennis, so I decided to try it out. After my first year playing it, I found it really enjoyable being a part of something,” Constantino said.
Unlike many athletes who begin their sport at a very young age Constantino started his journey with tennis simply for fun. Even though Constantino admits he may not be the most experienced player, his enjoyment of the sport is what keeps him coming back to the court.
“I began playing tennis for fun, so I might not be the best, but I sure enjoy it,” Constantino said.
Practicing the sport has not always been easy for the team. One challenge that Constantino points out is the lack of tennis courts at the school. Because of this, the team must work around limited practice opportunities. Even with that problem Constantino still finds ways to keep improving during the season.
“Lenoir City High School does not have any courts, so it is really difficult to be able to practice. Every week we practice on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and in my free time I go with friends as well,” Constantino said.
Tennis is a sport that requires a lot of focus on form and technique. Constantino points out one of the hardest parts of training is learning how to position his body correctly. Developing that skill takes time and effort especially adjusting to the different types of shots during a match.
“The most difficult part is definitely learning how to position your body for every hit. Whether it’s a forehand or backhand, your stance and force are all important factors,” Constantino said.
Every player has their own strengths. Constantino has built confidence on one of the shots that he relies on during matches. Constantino explains that developing this skill came from observing other players and putting in extra practice outside of training.
“My forehand is definitely my strongest aspect when it comes to tennis. I developed this by watching my teammates and practicing on my own,” Constantino said.
Even though tennis can be played individually, it is still important to have strong teamwork when it comes to double matches. Communication becomes really important and it can also builds a stronger relationship with your teammates.
“Tennis is mainly an individual sport, but when playing doubles it’s important to communicate with each other to help ensure a victory. Working in a team is like no other,” Constantino said.
Like every athlete, Constantino has goals he hopes to achieve this season. Constantino’s goals showcase his want for improvement in a certain skill and gain more confidence during matches as he obtains experience over the year.
“I hope this season I manage to win a game or two. I hope to improve on my serves and backhand,” Constantino said.
Through both wins and losses, Constantino says what motivates him the most is simply playing the sport. Constantino’s advice for younger athletes is to make the most of opportunities a sport can give you and to have fun in general.
“I enjoy tennis, and just the excitement of playing is enough to motivate me. If I had to give a beginner advice, I would tell them to enjoy it because tennis can give you so many opportunities,” Constantino said.
