Baskets and Bonds

Dylan Brewster (F) is a vital part of our school; he is encouraging, energetic and an all around great teacher. At the school, he balances both the roles of being the boys’ basketball coach as well as being the freshman seminar teacher. Though his class, he gives freshman the skills they need to strive while in high school. Similarly, as a coach, Mr. Brewster works as hard as he can to have the team succeed, whether it be basic teamwork skills or solving problems on the fly.

“Have I had an impact? I don’t know. I’d like to think so, but at the same time, it’s really not about me. I enjoy you guys in class, like yourself, having you in class. I enjoy being around the kids and being around sort of young adults and the basketball team is the same stuff. And then on top of that, faculty and staff, I just like being around people and hopefully helping them with whatever it is that they want to accomplish,” Brewster said.

Many speak of the impacts that Coach Brewster’s lessons and words have had on them, both academically and personally. Students often say that they have come out of his class feeling more prepared for the high school experience. Mr. Brewster thrives in the chaos of unruly freshman and sporty athletes. He is a social person who love his job and the people he interacts with on a daily basis. Being an alumni of the school, he has the personal connection that makes it more than just a job. He started with coaching recreation basketball while he was a student and just became attached to it. Eventually, after he graduated from both high school and college, he saw the job listing for LC and decided to return to his alma mater.

“[Freshman Seminar and coaching are] both very similar. Coaching and teaching are one and the same, right? It’s just different subjects. It’s the same thing if you were to teach a different class, right? Like I’m trying to teach good work habits in freshman seminar. We’re trying to make sure we’re, you know, staying organized, know what we’re doing, on top of things. And then we go over the seven habits book, again, just trying to make sure people know, you know, how individually they can continue to get better and then how we can treat people the right way and represent ourselves, in a certain way. And that’s the same thing with basketball. Trying to do the same type of stuff, right? Trying to make sure that they, that we know how to work hard, know how to, treat our teammates well, how to, be involved in something bigger than ourselves same thing with freshman seminar being involved at the school right there they’re one in the same just a different subject matter really except very similar,” Brewster said.

Being able to pick up on the similarities is philosophy between both of his teaching positions shows his knowledge as a experience teacher. Even still, Coach Brewster shows his excellency as a person and a teacher. Brewster loves his job and has the strength and will to keep up with it. Hats off to you Coach Brewster and may you have a great season.
