Booing Boo Carter

Booing Boo Carter

On November 16, 2025, Southeastern Conference college football fans were shocked by the dismissal of the University of Tennessee’s starting defensive back and punt returner, Boo Carter.  Carter has played two seasons for the University of Tennessee and has created quite an impact on the team.  With his explosive athleticism and dynamic footwork, Carter became a major asset to the first string in defense. In doing so, Carter had a major impact and connection with the fan base, which was evident when the stadium developed a chant in his name. When the Jumbotron announced Boo Carter as the starting lineup for defense, the stadium would echo, “Boooooo” in a deeper tone. However, the chant would resound throughout the stadium for only one full season.

Brylan Maples (12) has been a University of Tennessee fan since he was 12 years old. Maples has a lot of pride and support for the volunteer football program and volunteer sports overall. Also taking part in the chant for Boo Carter, Maples saw him as a highly influential athlete with great value to the team.

“The impact [Carter] had was pretty good, especially since we lost our punt returner. I think as a community we were all equally excited when we heard UT was recruiting him,” Maples said.

The 2025 Volunteer football season was cut short for Carter, playing a total of nine games for Tennessee before being dismissed from the team. He recorded 25 combined tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, and three forced fumbles. Nevertheless, his incredible skill and versatile traits did not make him an honorable teammate. The main reason for the dismissal was because of Carter’s response to the New Mexico State game when he failed to show up. Prior to the game, Carter was told by the coaches that he would not be the starting defensive back or punt returner. As a result, Carter did not attend the New Mexico game on November 15, 2025, a day before he was let off. Carter’s actions fall far short of any standard expected in athletics, particularly for someone with such a successful career. Turning his back on his team and showing disrespect for the sport is incredibly inexcusable.

Throughout the season, Carter has shown a series of problems on behalf of the team. In recent months, Carter’s absence from multiple summer team activities had already drawn negative attention from team leaders. He was given a second chance by the head coach, Josh Heupel, to prove himself as a reliable teammate. Clearly, Carter failed to demonstrate reliability; instead, he showed himself to be inconsistent and ungrateful.

“I feel like [Carter’s] punishment was reasonable, especially since he thought about transferring at the beginning of the year. I personally think he deserved it because, as a Vols fan, I saw it turning up like the Nico Iamaleava situation. And if that was to be the case, we [UT Fans] were better off without him,” Maples said.

The University of Tennessee versus Florida University took place one week after Carter’s dismissal.  The game resulted in the Volunteers dominating Florida and contributed to the Gators’ game losing streak. The overall score was thirty-one to eleven, with Tennessee overpowering Florida.
