164 years ago today, congress passed the Fugitive Slave Act, requiring the return of all runaway slaves to their owners. Anyone assisting the runaway slaves would face severe punishment. Today, we know the horrors of slavery and that no one can own another human being, but at this time, slavery an enormous part of the economy and not thought of as “bad” by most people.
