Christmas VS Thanksgiving: A Holiday Hubbub

Christmas VS Thanksgiving: A Holiday Hubbub

Every year in the fall, the debate of when to put up Christmas decorations presents itself; some wait as long as the week before Christmas, while others decorate as soon as the beginning of November. People forget about a whole holiday in between, that being Thanksgiving. As the resident holiday in November, Thanksgiving brings so much to the table; it is a time of fellowship among friends and family, to show how you appreciate your loved ones, but some just gloss this over for Christmas. While both holidays are important exhibitions of human behavior, Thanksgiving shows the love of giving and being thankful for what we have. Logan Clayton is leaning toward waiting until after Thanksgiving.

“It just makes more sense if you put them up beforehand, then you have all your stuff, plus the Thanksgiving decorations that you might have up,” Clayton said.

Clayton points out that the holidays are already really busy, whether it be with having guests over or even just planning events. That last thing that anyone needs in all of that stress is an extra object in the way or something to stuff up the room. Connor Waugh has a similar stance on this topic.

“[Putting Christmas decorations up] before Thanksgiving, it’s truly a mistake to do so. Because Thanksgiving is still a holiday in the end, and there’s still a whole month until Christmas,” Waugh said.

Decorating can be the most fun part of the holiday, especially Christmas. There is something special about making your home reflect your family with colorful lights and dancing inflatables. You can still decorate for Thanksgiving, but most people end up skipping all the wonders it has. Cornucopias, turkeys, and pumpkins are all symbols of this great holiday. Even still, people get so caught up in their Christmas expectations that they end up stressing themselves out.  While the holidays can be great, people need to take the time to enjoy themselves amongst all the chaos. Even with these strong takes, there are still those who want to enjoy the Christmas spirit longer; after all, the holidays are a great time. Sydni Taylor (9) is one of these early decorators.

“[I put my decorations up early] so I can enjoy them, because I have to take them down after. When I put them up before [Thanksgiving], I can enjoy them more because I get to see them a lot, and then I get to take it in, and it makes it more Christmassy. But then, if I put them up after, I won’t enjoy them, and it’s annoying, and I’m not in the good Christmas spirit,” Taylor said.

Sydni Taylor does her part to make the holidays her own, putting them up a little early to make the season last. Everyone has different ways to partake in the festive season, and for some, it is managing their time between the two. After all, this time of year is about sharing the joys of your life with others. Whether or not there is a right time to decorate your home, the Christmas and Thanksgiving spirits are for everyone. Happy Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas, Panthers!
