Lots of students here at LCHS are members of National Honors Society. This club provides students with opportunities to stay involved throughout the community, inside and outside of the classroom. Annabelle Wheeler (11) has taken on a new role this year by finding outreach opportunities and providing volunteer hours for those looking to increase their own.
“Recently I’ve been researching a bunch of new opportunities to make everyone be able to have as many hours as possible. It’s really important to me to find accessible times and fun school related projects for everyone,” Wheeler said.
Wheeler has taken a proactive approach in finding ways for everyone to be involved in NHS this year. In previous years Wheeler has felt that the club did not offer as many projects as she thought that they could have. This has inspired Wheeler to think outside of the box. Wheeler’s main goal is to offer fun and creative activities that will bring people together through outreach.
“Some of the ideas I have had are having a teacher talent show, candy grams around the holidays, a bake sale, a food drive, fixing the teacher flowerbed, and making holiday cards for senior citizens,” Wheeler said.
This role, for Wheeler, has been an easy one to step into, but has come with some challenges as well.
“I have experience in leadership, as well as many friends in NHS, making it a really fun position. I love helping people, but of course I will say it has been a lot to come up with and take on,” Wheeler said.
Volunteering is important for many reasons, but Wheeler reflects on her own insight into what it truly means to her.
“Volunteering is so important mainly because it helps the community, but even more so around the holidays. Sometimes people just need a little extra help, and it’s important to me to be that. Volunteering helps me give back to the community that gives to me. That really fulfills me to be a part of,” Wheeler said.
As we reach the end of first semester, as well as the start of the holiday season Wheeler advises others to find peace in giving back. Even if NHS is not something you are currently involved in or maybe you are looking to be in the future, there are still ways to support your community and spread a little extra joy to all of those around you.
“Once you set yourself up for success you are able to share it with others. Keeping up in your classes, focusing on yourself, and finding balance will help you in that regard. Then you will be able to give it back to others and start to get involved,” Wheeler said.
So no matter how you choose to give back, make sure your heart is full. Be creative, spread joy, and extend a helping hand to those in need. NHS is accepting new members fall 2026, and make sure that you sign up, so that you too can be a part of something bigger than yourself.
