FCA stands for Fellowship of Christian Athletes. This club is a way for the Christians on sports teams to share their stories with other athletes who want to learn more about the Lord. This gathering is a mainly student-led organization, with the help of Volleyball coach Tyler Hardin, from 7:30 to 8:05 every other Wednesday morning before class. This is an important club for the students that can’t make it to church on Wednesday nights because of sports commitments, and especially for people who are intimidated by the thought of going to church where they don’t know anyone. Norah Alcorn says that FCA is important to her because she didn’t grow up going to church, and being able to learn about the Lord and grow closer to Him is very important to her.
“I haven’t really grown up around church, so just getting to be around my friends, and of course closer to God, and grow my desire to be closer to God, it’s had an impact on me,” Alcorn says.
It’s important for kids who haven’t been able to be around the Lord and his believers to have the enlightening experience of connecting to a wide range of people in the name of the one true Lord. On the flip side, it’s important for these people to share how the Lord has saved them and made an important impact in their lives. Norah says that she enjoys hearing what the speakers have to say and appreciates the courage it takes to talk about Him in front of all the people you know and are around all day.
“They all do such a good job, I know it can be very nerve-wracking to get up there in front of all your friends and speak about something you might be afraid to speak about, specifically religion, and it just hits you differently because it’s all through the Lord,” Alcorn says.
Norah also says that she’s encouraged by the sheer number of people who wake up early and come to the school in a quest to learn and teach about God. When asked about whether she noticed growth in the club, Norah had a contribution.
“I have, actually. We just started doing this on Wednesday mornings on Wednesdays, and I have seen more and more people coming…it’s nice to see,” Alcorn says.
As for how the students in FCA interact outside of meetings, everybody seems to be their own person, with their own opinions, but the shared belief shines in everyone. Despite whatever classes you take or grades you make, the Lord shines through you in how you act with other people, and FCA just serves to further exaggerate this joyful glow.
“I definitely believe separately everyone is their own person outside of FCA, but when we all step into the same room to worship and learn about God, we become one union,” Alcorn says.
Fellowship of Christian Athletes is a club that students hold dearly, because it provides them with union and safety through the comfort of the Lord.
