From Game to Cinema

The release of Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 has sparked widespread discussion among students, particularly those who grew up playing the games or watching gameplay videos online during the franchise’s peak popularity. For many viewers, the sequel was more than just a horror movie—it was a return to a series that played a major role in their childhood, shaping their expectations and emotional reactions before the film even began.

Many viewers left the theater reflecting on how the movie made them feel emotionally, especially when comparing it to their early memories of the franchise. Nostalgia played a significant role in shaping reactions, but it also led to disappointment when the movie did not align with long-established storylines from the games. Brooklyn Cox (12) and Kinsey Utter (12) share their thoughts on the film.

“Nostalgia—it was nostalgic because it reminded me of my childhood. I was a little let down because of the lore stuff,” Cox said.

Rather than focusing on story accuracy, some viewers paid more attention to the overall tone and enjoyment of the film. The movie frequently blended horror elements with humor, which made it feel less intense but more approachable for certain audiences. This balance caused mixed reactions, particularly among longtime fans who expected a darker atmosphere.

“It was cheesy, but it was fun,” Utter said.

Before watching the movie, many viewers had already formed expectations based on trailers, the first Five Nights at Freddy’s film, and their familiarity with the video game series. For some, the sequel met those expectations by continuing a similar style and pacing rather than attempting to drastically change the formula.

“It pretty much is what I expected. They did the best they could,” Cox said.

Others went into the movie without expecting it to be genuinely frightening, which influenced how they interpreted its suspense and scare moments. Instead of constant tension, the film relied more on visual spectacle and familiar characters, making it feel lighter than traditional horror movies.

“I didn’t expect it to be something crazy scary,” Utter said.

Although opinions differed on the movie as a whole, specific scenes stood out as memorable talking points after the screening. The animatronics, a defining feature of the franchise, played a major role in leaving lasting impressions, especially during moments of sudden violence or surprise.

“When Toy Chica squished that guy’s head,” Cox said.

The ending of the movie also became a major source of discussion, as it introduced unexpected twists that left audiences shocked or confused. For many viewers, the final moments reshaped their overall opinion of the film and sparked conversations long after leaving the theater.

“Probably the last scene, but I can’t spoil it. It was unexpected,” Utter said.

Despite these standout moments, the movie’s storyline caused confusion for some viewers, particularly those familiar with the complex and heavily analyzed lore of the Five Nights at Freddy’s universe. Longtime fans often expect careful continuity, and any deviation can feel jarring.

“Everything was confusing, especially there being two Michaels,” Cox said.

Accuracy to the games became one of the most debated aspects of the sequel. While adaptations often take creative liberties, some viewers felt the movie changed too much, making it difficult to connect the on-screen story to the original games.

“Based on the games, the movie isn’t accurate,” Utter said.

Even with confusion surrounding the storyline, individual characters still stood out and resonated with viewers. Familiar animatronics and recognizable voices helped create moments of excitement, especially for fans who grew up with specific characters.

“I liked Toy Bonnie because MatPat voiced him. Bonnie was one of my favorite characters growing up,” Cox said.

Other viewers connected more with human characters who showed empathy and moral strength within the movie’s darker setting. These moments of compassion helped balance the horror elements and made certain characters more relatable.

“Charlotte, because she tried to help people,” Utter said.

When comparing the movie to the original Five Nights at Freddy’s games, differences in tone became even more noticeable. The games are known for their slow-building tension and psychological fear, which some viewers felt was missing from the sequel.

“Not at all—it didn’t follow any of the lore,” Cox said.

The shift in tone made the movie feel less serious to some audiences, with humor and exaggerated moments replacing the quiet dread that defined the games. As a result, the sequel felt more playful than frightening to certain viewers.

“I felt like the movie didn’t come across as seriously as the games did. The movie was more silly than the games,” Utter said.

The movie’s storytelling choices also raised questions about how accessible it would be to new audiences unfamiliar with the franchise. Without background knowledge, the complex plot may be difficult to follow.

“I would’ve been more confused than I already was,” Cox said.

However, some viewers felt the movie could still serve as an entry point, encouraging curiosity about the games rather than requiring a full understanding of the lore.

“It seemed like a fun introduction that makes me want to play the games now that I’ve seen the movie,” Utter said.

Comparisons between Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 and the first movie led to divided opinions. Some viewers felt the sequel failed to live up to the original, while others believed it improved certain aspects of the horror.

“It was worse than the first movie, and a lot worse than other horror movies I’ve seen,” Cox said.

Others believed the sequel heightened fear and intensity, even if it struggled with storytelling clarity.

“I feel like the second one was scarier than the first one,” Utter said.

Despite criticism and confusion, both viewers agreed that the movie still appeals to a specific audience. Fans of the franchise are likely to enjoy spotting familiar characters, references, and callbacks, even if the plot is messy.

“I’d recommend this movie to people who have watched or played the games,” Cox said.

For others, the movie works best when viewed as entertainment rather than a serious or cohesive horror story.

“I’d recommend this movie to people who are looking for a fun horror flick that’s really confusing,” Utter said.

Overall, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 delivers a chaotic mix of nostalgia, humor, and spectacle. While it may not satisfy every longtime fan, it continues to generate discussion and debate, proving that the franchise still holds a strong grip on audiences years after its original release.
