Oh My Oscars (Again): The 2022 Nominations

Oh My Oscars (Again): The 2022 Nominations

Hollywood’s biggest night is set to return on March 27th at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, California. This year’s ceremony will look somewhat different than the year prior as the award show and its producers attempt to regain normalcy in the show’s traditions and increase their viewer support.

Thanks to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, last year’s ceremony earned the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences one of the lowest viewer engagement rates of its entire 94-year history. But, with coronavirus cases seemingly on the decline (for now) in Los Angeles and its surrounding counties, the Academy has made the decision to continue with the awards in person. Nominees and other audience members, however, will need to show proof of vaccination, as well as two negative COVID tests.

In an effort to appeal to the general public, many awards, including Film Editing and Original Score, will be presented exclusively to the audience prior to the telecast in order to minimize the excessive coverage for viewers. This has caused a bit of backlash within the Academy, with some members questioning the equity of the awards presentation (it wouldn’t be the Oscars without a little bit of drama, right?).

Regardless of the Academy’s plans for the ceremony, the competition within the categories has become quite electric. There’s a relatively decent amount of first-time nominees, such as Kristen Stewart, who earned her first Best Actress nod for her portrayal of Princess Diana in Pablo Larraín’s Spencer. Additionally, a lot of familiar faces returning to the podium include Nicole Kidman and Kenneth Branagh, for their work in Being The Ricardos and Belfast, respectively.

With Wanda Sykes, Amy Shumer, and Regina Hall set to host, this year’s Academy Awards are sure to impress. You can view the nominations below, and tune in to watch the awards unfold live on ABC, starting at 8 pm EST on March 27th, 2022.
