Weight of Success

Taylor Townsend is the number one ranked junior in the world. She has won a pro-level game and the 2012 Australian Open junior singles and doubles titles. The USTA (United States Tennis Association) wasn’t concerned about all of these stellar accomplishments–they were concerned about her weight when she stepped on the scale. Because of Townsend’s weight, the USTA refused to pay for her fare to the U.S. Open, therefore, Townsend’s parents paid for the fare.

She made it to the quarterfinals in singles and won in the doubles. Despite the USTA comments, Taylor Townsend is on her way to being one of the best young tennis players in America. Weeks after Townsend’s eighteenth birthday, she won a wild card entry placement into the French Open. At the French Open, she beat veteran Vania King, and then upset twentieth seeded Alize Cornet. She has reached hundred third in the world wide rankings. In the past few days, Taylor played Serena Williams and lost in two sets six to three and six to one. Hopefully Taylor will continue to rise in the rankings and continue to not let other people determine what her body type should limit her too.
