Pintertest #1: The Cake

The world of Pinterest can suck a person into a dark hole of projects and recipes that either work or they don’t. I, being the strange teenager I am, spend hours on there looking at different things to cook and challenging projects. Most of the time I’m looking for things to cook for parties and birthdays. In the past few days I have had several birthdays come up, so for one of them I decided to make a chocolate cake. So as a normal Pinterest user, I looked up different cake recipes, and I came  across one that I really liked and seemed easy to make. I stand corrected.

When I went to the grocery store I figured out very quickly that this cake needs a lot of different ingredients. I spent around $25 for everything I needed,  and that was with the store brand. So, after the store I began making the cake. Homemade cakes can take some time to make. You can’t just throw some eggs in premade cake mix and say it’s homemade. You have to be prepared to spend time making this cake, and for the most part, I was. The recipe had many steps which is fine; it was when I put the cake batter in the oven to cook that I had issues.

I read the entire article and saw where the writer put that the cake might take longer to cook in the middle and that you just need to watch it. So, I did just that. I waited about 25 minutes, checked the cake, and it was still not done. Then I waited about five more minutes and the middle was still not done. About 45 minutes into this process I realized my cake was burning around the edges and not cooking in the middle, which means my cake failed the first time. So it was time for round two with this non-baking cake.

I had leftover batter, so I decided to make another cake thinking that maybe the first time was user error. Turns out it was not user error because when making this cake it was thinner than the last one so I had to watch it too make sure that it did not burn. I checked the cake with my toothpick and it came out clean which means it’s done. I pulled it out of the oven and let it cool, and then I go to cut it and some of it is still uncooked and what was cooked was sticky and hard to work with. So let’s just say that I’m going to stick to store-bought cake mix for a while, but as most know Pinterest things sometimes don’t work out. This was one of those times where it was a big bust.
