February 13, 1861
154 years ago today the heroic act that would earn the first Medal of Honor took place. Colonel Bernard J.D. Irwin volunteered to rescue Second Lieutenant George N. Bascom and the 60 men trapped with him. With a group of 14 men, Irwin heroically rescued all of the men and later and received the Medal of Honor after its creation in 1862.
