It’s not every day high school students get to tour one of the most iconic cities in the world. This spring, the Singers and Journalism programs are sending students to New York City to make memories and represent our school in the city. Mr. Cross is taking his Singers choir to sing in a cathedral, while they are in the city, the group has lots of other destinations for sightseeing planned to make the most of their trip. Along with singing an advanced set of music in the city, Singers get to visit places such as the Museum of Modern Art, the 911 Museum, Top of the Rock, the Statue of Liberty, and Radio City Music Hall. They will also attend two top shows on Broadway. Two students in Singers, Chloe Tinker (11) and Denali Lambdin (10) are extremely excited about the adventures ahead.
“We are going to two Broadway shows and also the 911 Museum and the Rockefeller Center. We are going to go to St. John the Divine church in Harlem; it’s like a cathedral, and we’re going to sing. Then, we’re going to go eat pizza,” Tinker said.
“I cannot wait to sing in the church. It’s going to be awesome. We’re going to see musicals and then sing at the church and just walk around. I’m excited for the musicals because I’ve never seen a musical in person,” Lambdin said.
A few high-achieving journalism students are selected to take a trip to New York City this spring. In addition to the sights and shows that Singers will see, Mrs. Wallace is taking her journalism students to attend journalism courses at Columbia University. The students are looking forward to expanding their journalism and communication skills while also making memories with their friends that will last a lifetime. Anna Johnson (12) is excited to take advantage of this trip for her senior year.
“This will add to my senior year a lot because going to New York is an experience and you may not always get to have that experience, so I’m gonna take it all in while I can. What I’m most excited for is being able to go and just experience it with the people that I spend the most time with. Being able to go to a college-level journalism class is really exciting to me,” Johnson said.
Although Johnson is not planning on taking a journalism pathway in college, she is excited to attend college classes and experience all New York City has to offer.
“As of right now, I’m not planning on doing journalism in the future, but I do feel like it is still a good learning experience,” Johnson said.
Another outstanding journalism student, Lily Rich (11), is thrilled for the opportunity to represent Lenoir City High School on the trip.
“I’m excited to see New York City. I’ve never been, and it’s like one of those cities that you have to go to, and I’m really excited about it. I think it’s gonna make me love journalism more by going to take those professional, college classes. It’s got me thinking of doing it in college as a minor. I hope to learn more design and photography things and just experience the city,” Rich said.
The Singers and Journalism departments are excited to witness and experience the vibrant culture and history of New York City but also take advantage of the incredible chance to build relationships and make memories that they will never forget–memories that will shape their high school years and inspire them for the future adventures that lie ahead.
