Coaching high school sports always comes with challenges, and Coach Pickell’s eight-year tenure with Lenoir City High School Girls’ Soccer was no exception. With years of experience under his belt, Coach Pickell led the team through numerous seasons, culminating in a historic run to the sub-state in his final season. His leadership and dedication left a lasting legacy on the program and set a high standard for future teams.
Making it to the sub-state was a monumental achievement for the Lady Panthers, especially for the seniors who had worked for four years to grow and develop as a team. The bond they shared played a crucial role in their historic run, the first of its kind for the Lenoir City High School girls’ sports team since the 1990s. Despite their incredible success, the bus ride to Texas Roadhouse after the season ended was bittersweet, as the team reflected on their journey and what they had accomplished together under Coach Pickell’s diligent leadership.
“I really enjoy soccer, I enjoy teaching kids how to play. I like watching them become teammates. I like the competitive side of the sport,” Pickell said.
Coach Pickell was the epitome of a great coach, someone who not only understood the technical aspects of the game but also knew how to inspire and guide young athletes to reach their fullest potential. His coaching style went beyond tactics and strategy; he built a culture of trust, discipline, and teamwork that became the foundation for the success of the Lenoir City Girls’ Soccer team.
“I am still friends with the people I coached and I like watching them raise their own kids knowing I’ve coached them as kids,” Pickell said.
He was deeply committed to each player’s growth, both on and off the field, always pushing them to be better while supporting them through challenges. His ability to foster a strong sense of unity among the team was one of his greatest strengths. Under his leadership, the Lady Panthers developed a bond that went beyond just playing together—they became a true team, working as one to achieve their goals.
“I wanted to win the district I thought we should have last year, but after that, it was just to enjoy my last year,” Pickell said.
Coach Pickell’s approach to coaching was rooted in high expectations, but he also knew how to motivate and uplift his players, especially during tough times. Whether a hard-fought win or a difficult loss, Coach Pickell remained a steady and supportive presence, helping the team stay focused and positive. His ability to balance discipline with encouragement created a motivating atmosphere where athletes could thrive.
His final season was a perfect reflection of his impact as a coach. Not only did he lead the team to a historic sub-state final run, but he also instilled a sense of pride and accomplishment in his players that will last far beyond their time on the field. His legacy will be remembered not just for the victories, but for the way he shaped the lives of those he coached.
