25 years ago today Nelson Mandela, Deputy National President of the African National Congress (ANC), was released after 27 years of imprisonment. Mandela was wrongfully imprisoned for his acts in the anti-apartheid movement and forced to live in terrible conditions for many years but he never broke. He continued to be a symbol for the anti-apartheid movement throughout his stay in prison and was eventually released when F.W. de Klerk, the South African President, lifted the ban on ANC and ordered he be released.
