113 years ago today the first Nobel prizes were awarded on the fifth anniversary of the death of Alfred Nobel. Nobel was the inventor of dynamite and other explosives and in his will he stated that he wanted his fortunes to be “annually distributed in the form of prizes to those who, during the preceding year, shall have conferred the greatest benefit on mankind.” Although no reason for this was ever given many believe it was due to his guilty conscience for creating something so often used in war.
