While some people are just trying to survive the experience that is high school, there are those that want to take extra chances to excel and develop their future. Our school offers many different clubs for students to partake in, some for recreation and some for experience, they are meant to add to the facets of student life. One student has taken this to the max in the best way possible, Piper Smallen (11) is in several different clubs this semester with more on the way for the spring.
“Club wise I do marching band, I do jazz band in the spring and concert band in the spring, and I do Science Olympiad, [which] I started that last year. I’m going to do it again this year, I’m in ASL club, which is a new club this year, I do NHS where I’m the junior vice president and I’m in Panther crew, I am president elect of Hosa and [I am] in marching band, where I am the assistant drum major,” Smallen said.
These clubs by themselves already require a lot of dedication and participation, but if you add them all together with the added stress of leadership for most of them it is quite the workload. With the little amount of free time she has, Smallen spends even more time on these clubs, whether it be making poster or planning events, Smallen does it all. Through thick and thin Smallen kept her devotion to her clubs, taking charge with her leadership roles and leading to their success.
“When I was going for a lot of them, of course, you have to do an interview process for most of them. So I had to do that for Hosa, NHS, Panther Crew and then marching band. So a majority of those had an interview process and also an application process, but when you’re applying they mainly look at your quality. So you’re like what leadership qualities you might possess, whether you’re going to be a good fit, what your role might look like in the club. So in order to get like HOSA, I got president elect because I was on leadership the previous year. So my sophomore year I was secretary of Hosa and I also was very committed to the club. That’s one of my main clubs that I’m more focused on is Hosa, so I like to contribute to a lot of them. So if you do want to be mentioned for leadership and stuff like that, you can’t just come to the club like every now and then. I had to be in those clubs every day and participate,” Smallen said.
Even with the long and sometimes difficult processes Smallen recommends that anyone who wants to apply should do it. For doing so many clubs, Piper Smallen is an inspiration to those, a sign that if you want to achieve something the best thing you can do is try out for it. Whether you are want to do clubs for recreation or study advancement, there is a club for everyone and an opportunity awaits.
