As the 2025 spring semester ends, changes are being discussed for the next school year. A new election system and voting opportunities will be implemented to create a new and improved student council.
Mrs. Wallace, the Journalism and Digital Arts teacher at Lenoir City High School, has decided to return to doing the elections for the student council. The members will be able to vote for the leadership positions, making it more student-oriented. Mrs. Wallace believes school-wide voting is the best system for electing council members.
“A true democracy should have students elected by their peers. Student government was never meant to be run by appointed people. That may work for other clubs, but student council positions should be elected,” Wallace said.
Previously, the faculty had decided who would be the leaders, which limited student engagement and representation. However, this new system allows every student to be able to express their opinions about who they believe will represent them the best. This allows the students to connect more with their friends during the campaign and builds community.
Blakelee Hodnett (9) is returning to the student council for her sophomore year. She expresses her opinions on the new change.
“I think the new voting system will make the election process more fair and transparent. It gives students a better chance to have their voices heard and ensures that leadership positions truly reflect the student body’s preferences. Plus, it could encourage more people to get involved since they’ll feel like their votes matter. I’m excited to see how it plays out and how it might shape student council in the future,” Hodnett said.
This change is expected to boost student involvement in the council. With students being able to pick their representatives, it could make the council more in tune with what everyone wants, and it will allow students to feel more connected to their school and teachers about being active in the community.
Overall, this new voting system is a big step for Lenoir City High School. It is focused on making sure students have a say about who will represent them. Many students have expressed excitement about this change.
