Homecoming Court Spotlight: Gabe Cannon

Homecoming Court Spotlight: Gabe Cannon

Homecoming season is a time filled with excitement, tradition, and school spirit. From pep rallies to the big game, it brings students together in a way few events can. But for Gabe Cannon (12), this year’s homecoming is even more special—he’s been nominated to the homecoming court, an honor that he never expected but deeply appreciates.

For those who know him, Cannon is more than just a familiar face in the hallways. Whether through his involvement [ in sports, clubs, or other activities], his leadership in the classroom, or his ability to make others smile, he has built a reputation as someone who brings positivity wherever he goes.

“I love playing football, love playing sports in general. I played football and basketball in high school. My faith is a big part of my life. I’m part of the FCA, Young Life, and I’m involved in a boys’ group Bible study every week. I work at a physical therapy office as a PT tech, and the medical field is my passion. I am going to college for medical, and I hope to get my doctorate one day,” Cannon said.

Throughout his time at Lenoir City High School, Cannon has been surrounded by people who have shaped him into the person he is today. One individual, in particular, has had a lasting impact on him, pushing him to be his best and setting an example of what it means to be a leader.

“I definitely say Coach Zeller. Through my four years of high school, I had him as a group leader, a football coach, and a teacher, and he’s been amazing at all of them. He’s taught me a lot of stuff. He’s a really wise man, and he’s someone to listen to,” Cannon said.

That influence has driven him to work hard, stay motivated, and always look for ways to improve—not just for himself but for those around him. That mindset has helped him make meaningful connections with classmates and teachers, which he believes played a role in his homecoming nomination.

When he first heard his name announced as a member of the homecoming court, his reaction was a mix of excitement and disbelief.

“I was excited; it’s gonna be a fun experience with all the guys. They’re all my good friends, so I knew we were gonna have a good time with it, and I was grateful to be selected for it,” Cannon said.

Being part of the court is more than just a title to him. It represents the support and recognition of his peers, something he doesn’t take for granted. While homecoming is often seen as a fun tradition, he also sees it as a way to bring the school together and celebrate what makes the student body unique.

“It means a lot. I mean, you only really get to be on homecoming court once. It’s like a once in a lifetime thing, and it’s really exciting and I’m grateful to all the people that voted for me,” Cannon said.

As soon as the news spread, his friends and family were quick to show their excitement. Whether it was through congratulatory texts, hugs in the hallways, or words of encouragement, their support made the experience even more special.

“Everybody was excited for me. They were happy that I was on it. My mom was really excited. She wants to escort me. All the guys were all excited for each other, and we don’t really care who wins; all of us deserve it,” Cannon said.

Despite his achievements and positive presence at school, the nomination still came as a surprise to him. He never saw himself as someone who would be part of the homecoming court, making the moment even more meaningful.

“Yeah, it was a surprise. I mean, I wasn’t really expecting to be on the court or not to be on the court. It was a surprise that I made it, and I’m happy I did and excited for it,” Cannon said.

As homecoming week continues, he’s soaking in every moment, knowing that this is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. More than anything, he hopes that when people look back on this time, they remember him for more than just his name being on the ballot.

“I hope I was a positive impact on people’s life and that they can remember me as somebody that was always there and always willing to give a helping hand and I hope that they can remember me as a man of faith. I put a lot into my faith, and I hope everybody can just take something from that and anybody that really needs help,” Cannon said.

Looking ahead, Cannon has plenty of plans beyond homecoming. With specific goals, like a sports season, academic focus, or extracurricular activity coming up, he’s eager to shift his focus toward new challenges and experiences.

“The student faculty game, the Friday after homecoming, we’re gonna win this year. The faculty better get ready,” Cannon said.

Of course, the idea of winning the title of homecoming king has crossed his mind, but he remains humble. For him, just being nominated is enough of an honor, but that doesn’t mean he wouldn’t enjoy the moment if he won.

“I would just, I don’t know, I would be happy, but I would, again, get lit with all the guys. Yeah, I would wear the crown around. I mean, take it all in, I guess,” Cannon said.

Regardless of the final results, Cannon is grateful for the opportunity to be part of something so special. He knows that years from now, he won’t just remember the title or the competition—he’ll remember the excitement, the friendships, and the joy of being recognized by his classmates.

As the big night approaches, one thing is certain: whether he walks away with the crown or not, Cannon has already won in the ways that matter most. His kindness, leadership, and school spirit have made a lasting impact, ensuring that his time at Lenoir City High School won’t be forgotten anytime soon.
