When Kyra Grason (12) joined the Young Environmentalists Club during her freshman year, she had the perfect vision of the progress she wanted to make. That vision, as well as all the others that the students of the Young Environmentalists Club had thought up, were able to be achieved through the hard work and dedication of each and every member.
The Young Environmentalists Club is a club for students who are interested in environmental-based careers as well as any students who are focused on being more environmentally responsible. The club is a space for anyone and everyone. There are no requirements to join.
“Anyone that wants to join should join it. It’s worth it. We have a lot of cool projects that we’re actually planning on doing in the spring. Once again it’s not just for service hours. Like we actually get out, we get our hands dirty, we get to do stuff. We get to go on field trips, learn about different kinds of animals, learn about the environment, and learn about water and the supply of it in the world. Just, if you are looking to be in any sort of environmental science career, then I would definitely say that this club is a really good head start,” Grason said.
The club has numerous benefits, for both students and the community. Young Environmentalists Club uses fun and creative tactics to help students be mindful of how their actions impact the environment, directly or indirectly. Through its service projects and teachings about our planet, the club creates a community of ecologically conscious students. Lucy Malone (10) shares her experience in the club.
“I think it’s a very healthy community of people that are in the club because we all share care for animals, plants, and the environment and that’s not something you can find everywhere. And it feels good when you make an impact and you can share that pride with others. I’ve gotten multiple of my friends to join and it just feels good when you help spread that message,” Malone said.
Community outreach is something that the Young Environmentalist’s Club is truly focused on. The club’s mission is to be environmentally responsible and help the community. This is why the club’s service projects are always in the school or the surrounding region.
“Yes, we are the ones who started the paper recycling in the classrooms. So if you ever see a big colorful bin in one of the classrooms, that was us. We handpainted them. We personally found ways to get them to be of use. We’ve done a lot of other things and we have a lot of other things coming up, so I wish a lot more people knew that they could join and not to be scared to. And it’s not something that you have to be accepted in, it’s just a bunch of students who want to make a difference in the community,” Grason said.
The club has made great strides in the improvement of the school’s campus as well as the surrounding areas, but these improvements are just the beginning for this determined group of students.
