In today’s digital age, technology and social media have become integral parts of modern education. Students are increasingly pursuing careers that require those social and digital skills and our school’s Audio Visual Production courses attract people who want to find their passion for content development. One freshman, Alan Fleming, decided to join the AV squad this year and discovered his interest in filmography.
“I got interested because it is a way to get to know our school and learn more about the people. I’m grateful to be able to capture these moments so people can always come back to see them,” Fleming said.
Throughout his first high school year, Fleming explored different roles in AV Production and gained a glimpse at what careers involving videography and social media could consist of. Much planning, learning, collaboration, and editing goes into each piece of content, and Fleming quickly embraced the tools and techniques of video creation with enthusiasm. There are many opportunities in this class for one’s personal creativity to flourish and produce unique content.
“I would love to make more documentaries and stuff like that on YouTube and make more videos that benefit the school in the future,” Fleming said.
Communication is an important skill to learn when making TikToks, reels, live streams, and videos. When working with groups, others have differing opinions about production and direction elements, and learning how to reach a common ground as well as create quality videos that satisfy everyone’s ideas. Fleming is continually learning that, as well as the workings of cameras and editing software to progress his passion for media. While he may not fully grasp the necessity and importance of tiresome deadlines yet, Fleming’s feverous intrigue in the world of technology shows what skills can be gained from media classes like AV.
“I was surprised to learn how simple cameras are to work because when I first saw them I thought that there was no way I would figure it out, but I found it was super easy to get into and would recommend it to anyone,” Fleming said.
Beyond short-form content, Fleming has also had hands-on experience when streaming a variety of sports games for YouTube. This type of setting is essential for the development of interest in social and technological jobs in the future because if one doesn’t work well in a group setting with lots of equipment, media may not be the best career choice. Fleming discusses the benefits of YouTube streaming and what he gained from those participatory assignments.
“When setting up for a game, you got to be there for the team. It is a very team-building atmosphere where you can’t just be thinking about what you want, you got to know that what you chose to do can benefit everyone else,” Fleming said.
His commitment to these extracurricular projects has further developed his skills and reinforced his passion for media production.
Whether or not he decides to pursue video production, the teamwork and digital abilities on different formats and apps are skills that won’t be forgotten. Fleming’s work and the work of all AV students showcase how integral the preservation of sports and student life can be online. You never know when you will capture the next touchdown, goal, viral video, or even just a cute moment between friends. With his drive and newfound curiosity, Fleming is poised for success in whatever creative path he chooses to take.
